Kelowna – Too little, too late for the Kamloops NorthPaws in Kelowna to begin the week suffering an 11-6 loss to the rival Falcons. The Falcons sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning, capitalizing on three errors and putting up six runs. Although Kamloops made it interesting in the ninth with three runs, it was not enough. The NorthPaws are just 2-10 on the road this season.
“Ya, I’m still trying to figure it out,” Head coach Riley Jepson said. “It’s great we’ve been winning at home, but we have to find a way to compete more on the road,”
Kelowna was able to score in the first two innings, holding a 2-0 lead. Falcons starter Max Biddle was solid as well, keeping the NorthPaws off the board, surrendering just four hits over five innings of work.
In the home half of the fifth, the Falcons capitalized on the NorthPaws’ mistakes. A leadoff double and a throwing error advanced a man to third. That was followed up by another error bringing in the runner from third. From there, a walk and three singles brought in the remaining runs as the Falcons jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
“That inning got away from us, and it sucks it bit us tonight,” Catcher Brock Grainger said.
The Paws responded with two of their own in the sixth, thanks to three straight hits capped off by an opposite field single from Tate Martin. Kelowna later punched back with one in the seventh and two more in the eighth, making it 11-2 heading into the ninth.
A walk and a single put a pair of runners on for Jackson Glymph. The first baseman made accidental contact on a check swing, putting the ball in play. A throwing error by the Falcons pitcher allowed Glymph to reach third and for two runs to score. Tanner Mitchell and Evan Dugdale both had RBI knocks, and all of a sudden the NorthPaws trailed by five with only one out.
Unfortunately, that’s all they’d get as former NorthPaw Cade Webber got the final two outs, securing the game one win.
“It’s always nice to score runs and build momentum going into the next day, but we have to find a way to do that sooner,” Jepson said.
The NorthPaws will host the Falcons tomorrow afternoon for a matinee Canada Day showdown. First Pitch is scheduled for 12:05.
